The Puanga waiata talks about the sign of the Māori New Year which comes around at winter time. This sign being a bright star predominantly seen over Mounga Taranaki. It is welcoming in the new year. The waiata is a song for children. It talks about the gathering of the stars rising up into the sky.
"Mangaroa" is the collection of stars in the Milky Way. These are the light in the dark - friends for the Puanga Star.
The shining stars and blanket of stars leads us to sleep.
The light in the dark are the sparkling stars.
